How to Prepare a Puppy for Their First Flight

Flying can be overwhelming for a young puppy- but with the right preparation, their first trip can be calm, safe, and even enjoyable. Whether you're a breeder sending a puppy home or a new pet parent meeting your pup for the first time, here’s how to prepare a puppy for their first flight.

1. Wait Until They’re Old Enough

Most airlines require puppies to be at least 8 weeks old to fly in-cabin. By this age, your puppy should be weaned, eating on their own, and strong enough to handle short periods in a travel carrier.

It’s always a good idea to double-check airline rules and make sure your puppy is alert, healthy, and comfortably settled before the flight.

2. Get Them Comfortable With the Carrier

Don’t let the first time your puppy sees their travel carrier be at the airport. Starting a week or two before the flight:

  • Place the carrier in their play area

  • Toss in treats, toys, or a soft blanket

  • Let them explore and nap inside on their own terms

Pro tip: Use a soft-sided airline-approved carrier with mesh sides and familiar scents inside to reduce stress.

3. Practice Calm Crate Time

Gradually help your puppy get used to staying in the carrier for longer periods:

  • Start with 5–10 minutes and work up to 45+ minutes

  • Play airplane sounds quietly in the background

  • Reward calm behavior with praise or a treat

This helps puppies learn that the carrier is a safe, quiet space- not a punishment.

4. Plan the Last Meal & Potty Break

Feed the puppy their last meal about 4 hours before flight time, not right before. This helps prevent upset stomachs during the trip.

Offer a potty break right before heading to the airport and again after security (if safe and private). We use pee pads in family restrooms, not public pet relief areas.

5. Communicate With Care

If you're not the one flying with the puppy, stay in close contact with the transporter or flight nanny. They should:

  • Confirm pickup

  • Send TSA updates

  • Share photos during the flight

  • Provide arrival and handoff confirmation

At PetCommute, we make these updates standard to give everyone peace of mind.

Your puppy’s first flight doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and professional support, even the youngest travelers can arrive happy, healthy, and ready to snuggle.
