How to Choose a Pet Transport Company

The right questions tell you more than a “best company” badge. Understand who transports your pet, how the journey works and what you are agreeing to.

The practical answer

Choose using a confirmed service fit, the identity of the actual transportation professional, a practical care and communication plan, relevant reviews, and a complete written quote. A rating or a starting price is useful context, but neither replaces those checks.

Understand the business model

You may be booking a transportation company, a brokerage coordinating independent professionals, or a marketplace where you select a driver. Ask who is responsible for each part of the journey. The label is less useful than understanding how the arrangement works for your pet.

Pet Commute is a pet transportation brokerage working with independent transportation professionals. A coordinator helps connect the client, sender, receiver and assigned professional. You can review our coordination team and selected ground partner profiles, then ask about the person proposed for your actual route.

Evaluate reviews in context

Read recent customer experiences and look for details about the service you need: flight handoffs, long-distance ground travel, communication or a household move. Check the original source and consider both the displayed average and the number of reviews.

A company’s Google reviews, a marketplace’s reviews and a particular driver’s reviews answer different questions. Pet Commute’s Google-connected profile currently displays a 5.0 rating; open the original profile for the latest count and feedback. A displayed average is not a guarantee about an individual trip.

Ask about the actual care plan

Ask about travel space, secure loading and unloading, supervision, rest opportunities and overnight arrangements. Tell the provider about escape tendencies, handling concerns, medications and any care instructions before they confirm the trip.

The American Kennel Club’s transport questions cover practical areas including vehicles, transport personnel, stops, emergencies and updates. [1] Use those themes to discuss your own pet’s plan. If a provider mentions registration, insurance or other credentials, ask which professional or business they apply to and how you can verify them; a logo alone does not explain coverage.

Confirm route-specific requirements

For a flight nanny, ask the team to check the airline, itinerary and carrier requirements. For ground travel, confirm the transporter’s requirements and any destination rules. Your veterinarian should advise on the pet’s suitability and medical preparation.

USDA APHIS provides information about domestic and international pet travel. [2] Use the official route-specific resources when planning documents and preparation. Avoid assuming that advice for another pet, airline or destination applies to yours.

Know who you can call or text

Ask who answers planning questions before pickup and who you contact during travel. Confirm how the sender, receiver and transporter are kept in the same conversation, what updates to expect and how a changed arrival time is communicated.

At Pet Commute, the personal coordinator is a point of contact through the journey, and scheduled trips connect the relevant people in a group text. Confirm the contact and escalation instructions for your trip. A clear communication plan matters more than an unsupported promise that no delay can ever happen.

Compare written proposals, not promises

Request the total cost for the same route, pet and service. Check which items are included and which you arrange separately. Confirm whether the proposal ends at an airport or includes delivery to a home, and identify every payment recipient.

Read the actual quote, invoice, disclosures and applicable transporter terms before accepting. Ask about pickup windows, schedule changes, cancellation and any additional services. Do not assume a general marketing page replaces the documents for the specific arrangement.

A useful final check before confirming

You should be able to explain the journey in plain language: who carries your pet, where the two handoffs happen, how timing is communicated, what the care plan includes and how much you pay each party. If one of those points is unclear, ask the coordinator to clarify it before proceeding.

Keep the sender and receiver’s details current and share any access instructions. Then use the agreed contact channel for updates. If you are still deciding between services or providers, our comparison hub offers sourced descriptions of different booking approaches without presenting them as an independent ranking.

Common questions

Does the highest review count prove the best fit?

Review volume and rating are useful evidence, but the proposed transporter, service, route and care plan still need to fit your pet.

Should I ask who actually transports my pet?

Yes. Establish the transportation professional’s identity, role and contact arrangements as part of the proposed plan.

Can I speak with a Pet Commute coordinator before booking?

Call 801-251-6330 or request a free quote. A coordinator can review the information you have and help clarify suitable options before arrangements are confirmed.
